About the museum
The Galerija Prešernovih nagrajencev za likovno umetnost Kranj puts into practice the idea of Kranj as a Prešeren town and links the city with Slovenian visual art. Its core is a permanent collection of works by visual artists who have received the Prešeren Award or the Prešeren Fund Award, from the sculptor Stojan Batič to painters, printmakers and other contemporary artists.
The gallery is housed in the Pavšlar House on Glavni trg, a building that combines different architectural styles from the history of the town of Kranj. In the 16th century, Renaissance remodelling extended the houses towards the courtyard and linked them with arcaded corridors; along the courtyard one of the most beautiful arcaded corridors in Slovenia has been preserved, and inside there are Gothic stone portals and windows. In the 18th century another arcaded corridor was added, and the house was later raised and given a new Baroque façade with images of Saint Christopher and Saint Florian.
In 2015 the gallery also presented its permanent collection of Slovenian art of the 20th and 21st centuries in a monograph. Besides the collection, the gallery holds temporary exhibitions; the gallery is run by Gorenjski muzej.
