About the museum
The town hall on Glavni trg in Kranj is one of the most important architectural landmarks in Slovenia. It consists of two buildings that gradually merged into a whole. The older part along Poštna ulica is first mentioned in the first half of the 16th century; on the ground floor is the late Gothic Columned Hall (Stebriščna dvorana), where merchants from distant places originally stored their fair goods.
The central part with the main entrance was built at the beginning of the 17th century and is among the most beautiful Renaissance palaces in Slovenia. The entrance hall on the ground and first floors is decorated with a net vault, and the Renaissance hall on the first floor is today the wedding hall, with inlaid doors dated 1638 and a wooden coffered ceiling. In 1965, Early Slavic graves and a hearth from the 9th and 10th centuries were discovered in the entrance hall.
In 1966 a gallery of prints and sculptures, donated to the Kranj municipality by the sculptor Lojze Dolinar, was set up in the lower and upper entrance halls; its care was taken over by the Gorenjski muzej (Gorenjska Museum). Today the house has three permanent exhibitions: the Dolinar collection, the archaeological exhibition “Železna nit” (The Iron Thread) and the ethnological exhibition “Ljudska umetnost na Gorenjskem” (Folk Art in Gorenjska).
