About the museum
In the house in Kranj the poet Dr France Prešeren (1800–1849) lived and practised law from autumn 1846 until his death on 8 February 1849. He rented the entire first floor; in the part of the house facing Mestni trg he set up a flat, and on the other side an office.
The house consists of two parts with a shared courtyard. The buildings were erected in the late Gothic period, and in the 17th century they were connected by a wooden corridor, which after the fire of 1811 was replaced by an arcaded corridor. The memorial museum was opened in the house on 8 February 1964, and the house was thoroughly renovated in 2000 and 2001.
On the Slovenian Cultural Day in 2020 the renovated permanent exhibition Prešeren – Pesnik (Prešeren – The Poet) was opened. It tells the story of the poet's life through Prešeren's poems; the original furniture is preserved in the poet's bedroom and office. The exhibition is complemented by visual installations by the artist Andrej Štular and musical accompaniment with settings of Slovenian poetry by Slovenian composers.
