About the museum
The lords of Snežnik are first mentioned in the 13th century; the present form of the castle, with its outer walls and towers, dates from the second half of the 19th century. The castle is considered one of the few in Slovenia with original interiors from that period. Today it is managed by the Narodni muzej Slovenije.
The visit is conducted in the company of a castle guide through four floors. The rooms are still furnished with original furniture and other objects from the second half of the 19th century: the salons and bedrooms of Princes Hermann and Ulrich and Princess Anna, guest rooms, historicist seating with its original upholstery and decorated stoves. A special feature is a room in the Egyptian style from the early 20th century; the castle atmosphere is completed by a piano, a billiard table, a theatre corner and hunting trophies, including a stuffed bear that has been in the castle for more than a hundred years.
The rooms in the outer walls are used for temporary exhibitions, and the ground floor houses a wedding hall. The former castle outbuildings now contain apartments and a café; the castle park is freely accessible.
