About the museum
Škrabčeva domačija (Škrabec Farmstead) in the core of the village of Hrovača near Ribnica is the birthplace of the linguist Father Stanislav Škrabec. The present appearance of the farmstead dates from the 1830s. The street façade is adorned with a relief portrait of Father Stanislav Škrabec, a sculpture by France Kralj from 1920.
Since 1998 a museum collection has been set up in the living part of the farmstead: objects and furniture are displayed as they were before the Second World War, when the Škrabec family still farmed here. The farm buildings, together with the neighbouring Kersničeva kovačnica (Kersnič’s forge) and Boštjanova hiša (Boštjan’s house), have been expertly renovated and form a venue for cultural events, business and social gatherings.
A guided tour covers all the buildings of the complex: the birthplace, Kersnič’s forge, the wooden barn and Boštjan’s house. Hrovača is a small village by Ribnica, which the German-speaking inhabitants of Kočevje (kočevski Nemci) once called Dreifensterdorf, after the original three windows on the ground floor of the residential houses.
