About the museum

The idea of a museum of building heritage in front of the Pleterje Charterhouse had been developing since 1984, when the old Gothic church was opened to visitors after restoration. Because of the growing number of visitors, parking had to be provided and the monastery's peace preserved, while also saving some decaying wooden buildings of local architecture. The idea was developed jointly by the heritage protection service and the monastery.

The open-air museum shows a typical farmstead of the Šentjernejsko polje. From 1990 to 1991 relocation of buildings began with the Kegljevič house from Ostrog, built in 1833; it was followed by the Baničeva hiša from Mihovo, a kozolec toplar (hay barn) from Ločna, two timber pigsties from Javorovica and similar structures. All buildings are arranged as a complete farmstead with a black kitchen, a bread oven and a kozolec standing apart from the house.

The museum is part of a larger national project of regional open-air museums and stands beside the only still inhabited charterhouse in Slovenia. Visits are by prior arrangement.
