About the museum
The idea of a firefighting museum was born in 1959, when the Metlika firefighters celebrated ninety years of activity and opened an exhibition on local firefighting at the Belokranjski muzej. As space there was too limited, the Gasilska zveza Slovenije (Slovenian Firefighters' Association), together with the historian Dr Branko Božič, began collecting old firefighting objects in 1960, with the aim of founding a specialist museum devoted to this one field.
The museum opened its doors on 16 August 1969, on the centenary of firefighting in Slovenia, since the first volunteer fire brigade, the požarna bramba, had been founded in Metlika in 1869. In 2003 it was named after Dr Branko Božič, long-time president of the Slovenian Firefighters' Association and co-founder of the museum.
The museum cares for the movable firefighting heritage of the whole of Slovenia: firefighting equipment and tools, photographs, fire pumps, decorations and badges. The historical heritage is presented in two exhibition buildings in the old town centre of Metlika, near the castle.
