About the museum

Raka Castle, mentioned in documents as early as 1161 and explicitly in 1279 as Castrum Arch, is considered one of the oldest castles in Slovenia. It was built by the Counts of Bogen in the second half of the 12th century, and later inherited by the Counts of Andechs and the Dukes of Spanheim. The castle burned down during the peasant uprising of 1515 and was rebuilt in the Renaissance style in 1525.

In the 17th century the owners were the Lords of Verniški, later the Kajzelj family, who set up hotbeds and a pond for breeding crayfish below the castle. Between 1784 and 1825 Baron Haller von Hallerstein saved the old castle from decay and gave it a new appearance. During the Second World War it served as a military post, and between 1948 and 1998 the Sisters of Mercy lived in it.

Today the castle has been restored, and visitors can see 34 rooms with authentic furniture from the 17th to 19th centuries. The museum collection comprises over 1,500 pieces of furniture, paintings, sculptures, clocks and weapons.
