About the museum
The museum building is part of a former military complex, first built for the Austro-Hungarian army; after the Second World War it was used by the Yugoslav People's Army. When the army left Slovenia in 1991, the southern part of the complex was assigned to museums, while artists and activists occupied the northern part and in 1993 founded the Avtonomni kulturni center Metelkova mesto.
The Moderna galerija received one of the buildings in the complex for its needs as early as 1995. Already in 2000 it presented the international collection Arteast 2000+ there, which indicated the concept of a future museum of contemporary art. The renovation of the barracks and the development of the museum quarter were carried out by the architectural office Groleger arhitekti.
The Muzej sodobne umetnosti Metelkova opened at the end of November 2011. Since then the Moderna galerija has operated as two units: Moderna galerija (MG+) in the building on Tomšičeva ulica presents modern art, while +MSUM at Metelkova focuses on the contemporary as the state of art, its institutions and social circumstances, which differ from modernism and postmodernism.
