About the museum

The Narodni muzej Slovenije – Metelkova stands on the Metelkova museum square, next to the Slovenski etnografski muzej (Slovene Ethnographic Museum), the Muzej sodobne umetnosti Metelkova (Museum of Contemporary Art Metelkova), the Slovenska kinoteka (Slovenian Cinematheque) and the Zavod za varstvo kulturne dediščine Slovenije (Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of Slovenia). The building is part of a former military complex that was converted into a museum quarter.

On two floors of the building, historical and art collections of objects from the 14th century to the present day have for the first time been given space on such a large scale. The permanent exhibition Zgodovinske in umetnostne zbirke (Historical and Art Collections) has been open since 3 December 2008. On the ground floor, topical temporary exhibitions are always on show.

Metelkova is one of the locations of the National Museum of Slovenia, whose seat is at Prešernova cesta 20. For a visit, a joint ticket for the Muzejska and Metelkova buildings is valid, allowing visitors to see both buildings.

Free admission: Every first Sunday of the month (except for major temporary exhibitions).

The price of €8 applies to visiting the National Museum of Slovenia at Muzejska or at Metelkova. Entry is also free for the unemployed, journalists, tourist guides, members of professional associations and students of certain fields. The price list is valid from 1 March 2026.
