About the museum
The Zemljepisni muzej Slovenije (Slovenian Geographic Museum) was founded on 7 May 1946 on the initiative of the geographer and academician Anton Melik, by the government of the People's Republic of Slovenia. It operated independently until 1962, when it was attached to the newly founded Institute of Geography of the University of Ljubljana. In September 2002 it came under the Geografski inštitut Antona Melika ZRC SAZU (Anton Melik Geographical Institute of the Scientific Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts), of which it is still part today.
The museum's basic task is to acquire, store and organise cartographic, pictorial and archival geographical material and to prepare exhibitions. It has a small office and archive section, where individuals or small groups can view the exhibited and archived material.
The display cabinets show thematic presentations, including maps and pictures of the Južna železnica (Southern Railway), tactile maps for blind and partially sighted people, the first world atlas in Slovene by Matej Cigale, textbooks and atlases by Blaž Kocen, and the technical equipment and cartographic tools used by the institute's researchers.
