About the museum
Antzasti is a private cultural project of the Antzasti Cultural Association of Dima, a non-profit organisation that decided to show the public ethnographic collections on the traditional rural life of Arratia and on the urban modernity of Bilbao. For years, restoration, collection, research and cataloguing work was carried out to recreate the atmosphere of the period as faithfully as possible. According to the house itself, the name means “place of blackthorns and apple trees”.
The museum occupies a farmhouse of the typical Arratia type: the ground floor housed the stable and the farm tools, above it was the living quarters, with the hayloft at the back, and on the top floor the ganbara, where the harvest was stored and dried. The house is set up as a family home in which two worlds of the late 19th and early 20th centuries are represented: the rural dwelling, furnished as a place that was lived in, and the modern urban dwelling in Bilbao. Each room of the farmhouse has its counterpart in the city, so that a farmhouse room is set against an urban dining room, and an open-hearth kitchen against one with a sheet-metal cooking range.
The visit, always guided, follows the cultural and social change brought by the Industrial Revolution, with the Arratia tramway as the common thread between the traditional farmhouse and the Belle Époque atmosphere of the Teatro Arriaga. The Artaun neighbourhood, at 350 metres above sea level, borders the Urkiola Natural Park, faces towards the Gorbea one, and has kept its landscape almost intact.
