About the museum
The Parketxe de Areatza is the interpretation centre of the Gorbeia Natural Park on its Biscayan side. It is on the Areatza square, in the Arratia valley, and belongs to the Diputación Foral de Bizkaia.
The building has three floors that represent a virtual ascent to the summit cross of Gorbea, which stands at 1,481 metres. The ground floor (up to 500 metres) deals with the subsoil and the lower areas, with rivers, riverbanks, the power of water, settlements and hay meadows. The first floor (500 to 1,000 metres) is devoted to the forest and its inhabitants, forestry activity and geological formations. The second floor (1,000 to 1,481 metres) shows the rock outcrops, caves and mountain grassland leading up to the cross.
The exhibition is complemented by interactive panels, display cabinets and multimedia projections. The centre offers educational programmes for schools, guided itineraries for groups, one-day tourist routes around the park, which may include visits to other museums or demonstrations of traditional trades, and sales of the park's informational material.
