About the museum
The Errementari Museoa was created by the Zeberio town council to conserve and disseminate the ethnographic heritage linked to the blacksmith's trade and the working of iron in the valley. It opened in 2018 in the basement of the former school building in Ermitabarri, now occupied by holiday apartments, in a space of about 120 m².
Over the centuries the blacksmith was essential to life on the Basque farmsteads (caseríos): he made and repaired tools for the fields, for construction and for household tasks. Zeberio once had as many as seven ironworks (ferrerías), active until the mid-19th century, which exported horseshoes, nails and wheel rims to Castile and even to America. After they closed, the forges worked for local demand, and at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th there were nine in the valley. The arrival of electricity and the decline of rural life marked the beginning of the end of this tradition.
The museum pays tribute to this heritage and to José Añibarro Aiesta, the last blacksmith of Zeberio, whose family practised the trade for several generations. With the original machinery and the recreated workshop, it offers a window onto the past of this trade.
