About the museum
Since 1997 Artea has hosted the Ecomuseo del Caserío Vasco (Basque Farmhouse Ecomuseum), the first of its kind, devoted to preserving and showing the customs of rural Basque life in a farmhouse and its surroundings. A fire in 2022 seriously damaged the main building, and Artea Town Council and the Bizkaia Provincial Council (Diputación Foral de Bizkaia) undertook its renovation with European funds.
After years of works, the complex opened in March 2026 under the name Ailarak Musiktopa, a space devoted to folk music, contemporary expressions of Basque culture and education. The name pays tribute to the woman of the farmhouse, embodied by Maurizia Aldeiturriaga.
The complex brings together an outdoor park of sound sculptures (Kanpa sentsoriala), a reception area (Harrera Gunea), the exhibition room of the restored farmhouse (Basetxe Erakusgela), a grove of light art around the ironworks (Burdinola), a building for small concerts and workshops (Korta Musiktopa) and the classrooms of the Arratia music school (Leon eta Maurizia Soinutegia).
