About the museum
The Ecomuseo del Caserío Vasco, also known as Euskal Baserria, opened in Artea (Bizkaia) in 1997. It pays tribute to the generations who made the caserío a self-sufficient institution and aims to show their wisdom, their sacrifice and their work.
The building is a replica of a traditional stone and wood caserío, with a pitched roof and oak as the main material. On the ground floor is a tavern-shop. On the first floor, the life, customs and work of the baserritarras are shown in spaces such as the kitchen, the bedrooms, folk medicine, wool, linen, carpentry, the box bed (camarote), and cider and txakoli (Basque white wine). The collection brings together more than a thousand authentic catalogued objects.
Outside, a landscaped area displays farm, mowing and transport tools, and the site also includes a theme park with antique machinery in operation, such as a forge, a flour mill, a hydraulic carpentry workshop and a bread oven.
