About the museum

Fuenteungrillo is an abandoned medieval village in the municipal area of Villalba de los Alcores, in the Montes Torozos. It was probably a small resettlement village of the 11th and 12th centuries, and its first reliable mention dates from 1201. It sits on two hills beside the Arroyo de las Fuentes and consists of several walled quarters, including Fuenteungrillo and Santa Coloma.

In the first half of the 13th century the lordship belonged to the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, which ceded it in exchange in 1251; in 1285 the monastery of Matallana received the remaining possessions. The population declined during the 14th century, and by around 1404 it was considered deserted. In the 1460s Doña Inés de Guzmán ordered the houses and the dovecote to be pulled down, and the site became sheep pasture, although the church of Santa María remained in use until the 19th century.

The archaeological room serves as an introduction to the village excavations, which show rural life, crafts, diet and medieval dwellings. The site's website brings together sections on its history, its archaeology and the objects found, such as pottery, iron tools, glass and items of clothing.
