About the museum
The Museo de Semana Santa of Medina de Rioseco was created in 2000 to preserve, exhibit and promote the heritage of the town’s Holy Week, from the popular religiosity of the early 16th century to the present day. It is the first and only museum of its kind in the province of Valladolid. Medina de Rioseco’s Holy Week was declared of National Tourist Interest in 1985 and of International Tourist Interest in 2009.
It is housed in the church of Santa Cruz, a very spacious building with a single nave, barrel vault and chapels between the buttresses. It was designed by Felipe de la Cajiga and continued by architects from the school of Juan de Herrera, such as Pedro Mazuecos, Juan de Nates and Juan González de Cisniega; the façade closely follows Vignola’s model for Il Gesù in Rome, and the elliptical dome over the high chapel is by Francisco Cillero. The restoration project was directed by José Ignacio Linazasoro.
The exhibition is organised into thematic areas: the origins of Holy Week, the brotherhoods, the floats (pasos), the liturgy, the written heritage, the processions, music and instruments, and the significance of the festival. Among the floats are works from workshops such as those of Juan de Juni and Gregorio Fernández.
