About the museum

Ca n'Alluny (the “distant house”) is the house that the British writer Robert Graves built in Deià together with the poet Laura Riding, among the olive groves of the valley. They moved in in 1932, but in 1936 the Civil War forced them to leave the island. Graves returned in 1946 with his new family and lived there until his death in 1985. In this house he wrote, among other works, I, Claudius.

After the death of his widow, Beryl Graves, in 2003, the Balearic Government acquired the house. The Fundació Robert Graves, founded in 2005, restored it and opened it to the public in summer 2006 as a Literary House, with a permanent exhibition about the author. The house was restored as faithfully as possible to its appearance in 1946: the printing press is back in its place, the study remains intact, and the library shelves have been refilled with books from other rooms.

The visit begins in a small auditorium with a 15-minute film about the poet’s life and a large illustrated chronology. Then you walk through the rooms of the house, the exhibition room and the garden, restored to its 1930s layout. The visit is self-guided, with explanatory panels in each room.
