About the museum
The Museu de la Mar occupies the former oratory of Santa Caterina d’Alexandria, high up in the Port de Sóller. Since 2019 it has formed part of the Museu Marítim de Mallorca and tells the local history of Sóller and its harbour, with a collection that traces the community's relationship with the sea over the last two hundred and fifty years.
The Museu Marítim de Mallorca was created in December 2017 as a consortium between the Consell de Mallorca and the Govern de les Illes Balears. It takes over the legacy of the Museo Marítimo de Baleares, which operated between 1951 and 1972 in the Consolat de Mar building in Palma, and it has a second venue in ses Voltes, in Palma, where the maritime history of the island is addressed from a global perspective.
The exhibition room of the Port de Sóller, decorated in wood and blue tones, displays old naval pieces, models of boats, historical photographs and documents. The main themes are the master shipwrights (maestros de aixa), fishing, emigration and trade. The audiovisual room presents the project “La remor de la Memòria”, which records the intangible heritage and oral memory of the harbour through twelve testimonies.
