About the museum
The “Cádiz Prehistórico” interpretation centre is in Benalup-Casas Viejas, a site chosen because the rock paintings in the Tajo de las Figuras cave were discovered here in 1913, next to the Janda lagoon. That find gave the province a prominent role in prehistoric research and attracted scholars such as Cabré, Hernández Pacheco, Breuil and Obermaier.
The centre occupies a newly built building that blends into the landscape. It was built by the Diputación de Cádiz through the CULTURCAD project, managed by the IEDT and co-financed with ERDF funds within the Programa Operativo Integrado de Andalucía 2000–2006.
The visit covers twelve exhibition areas (areas 0 to 11) spread over three floors, with interactive resources, audiovisuals, environmental recreations, replicas and special effects. The themes range from prehistoric science and human evolution to food, tools, habitat, funerary rites, rock art, music and clothing. The centre is also the starting point for four routes around the province: Bahía de Cádiz, Serranía, Estrecho and La Janda Prehistórica.
