About the museum
The Museo de las Cúpulas is a house museum of wooden sculptures, built and filled with works by the craftsman Manuel Máñez in the Las Lagunetas area of Benalup-Casas Viejas, about ten kilometres from the town centre. The house is made of elm and eucalyptus wood, and around it are doorways with arches and wooden domes carved by him.
Máñez previously worked with coal and cork and made ploughs, yokes and dornillos. In July 1986 he began carving figures in wood, and his first pieces were harps. His sculptures depict people, animals and the image of Nuestra Señora del Socorro, the patron saint of the town; they are carved by hand from solid tree trunks, and some scenes reflect everyday life.
Máñez died in 2009, shortly after receiving the Gold Medal of the town council. His family keeps the collection and runs the museum, and his works have been shown in exhibitions outside the town.
