Museo Arqueológico de Medina Sidonia

Municipal archaeology museum with a visit to the sewers and the road of the Roman city of Asido Caesarina.

Opening hoursAdmission €3.50

About the museum

The Museo Arqueológico de Medina Sidonia, together with its Roman archaeological complex, presents the past of the ancient Asido Caesarina, a Roman city that reached considerable urban development. The museum's route covers the period from the Phoenician colonisation to the French invasion, and visitors can also go down to the Roman remains preserved beneath the town centre.

The archaeological space on Calle Ortega contains hydraulic structures from the 1st century AD, with about twenty metres of underground galleries that worked as a sewer system and give an idea of the city's level of urbanisation. Three types of structure can be distinguished: sewers, Roman rooms and cryptoporticoes. The main sewers, built of sandstone ashlar and covered by half-barrel vaults, lie on the periphery, where the whole network of smaller conduits drained.

A second point of the visit is the Roman road, discovered in 1997, which runs in places four metres below Calle Álamo. It is built of large stone slabs and has two pavements and a roadway five metres wide, with a sewer almost one metre high beneath the paving. Gaming boards used by children and adults were carved into the slabs of one pavement. The visit to the road leaves from the museum at 13:45.
