About the museum
The Palacio de los Barones de Valdeolivos was built in 1613 in the Aragonese Renaissance style and for generations was the residence of the Ric family. In 1765 Charles III named Pascual Antonio Ric y Exea Baron of Valdeolivos. The third baron, Pedro María Ric, was regent of the Real Audiencia de Aragón and a deputy to the Cortes de Cádiz; together with his wife, Consuelo Azlor, he distinguished himself during the War of Independence.
The façade is sober and elegant. On the noble floor, rooms such as the Sala de la Música and the Sala de los Retratos preserve the atmosphere of the 17th to 19th centuries, with furniture, mural paintings, tableware, period costumes and oriental objects. Fourteen paintings by Fray Manuel Bayeu are displayed there.
The palace also holds documents, works of art and decorative objects, including 19th-century Asian pieces assembled by Enrique Otal y Ric during his diplomatic travels in Asia: Chinese and Japanese porcelain, lacquerware, silks and paintings on rice paper. A restoration costing around €1.7 million reinforced the structure, recovered the façade and interiors, and adapted the building to become a house museum showing how an Aragonese noble family lived.
