About the museum

The Abizanda museum was founded on the initiative of Professor Ángel Gari Lacruz, anthropologist and director of the museum, with the support of the then mayor, Pedro Santorromán. It is housed in the former 17th-century abbey, next to the church and the castle tower, a defensive building from the 11th century.

It holds some 8,000 objects, spanning from the first millennium BC to the first half of the 20th century. They record the beliefs and rituals through which Pyrenean society protected itself against magical and religious threats from nature, from neighbours and from the dead.

The permanent exhibition is divided into three sections: the protection of the house, the protection of the individual and the beliefs of the community. The pieces include espantabrujas (witch-scarers), amulets, crucifixes, rosaries, reliquaries, images of saints and talismans. An audiovisual presentation helps visitors understand the folk beliefs of the Central Pyrenees. The tour is completed by the church and the castle tower, which is used for temporary exhibitions.
