About the museum

Antonio Padrón (Gáldar, 1920–1968) was a painter from Gran Canaria. After his death, his family, with the agreement of the heirs prompted by his aunt Dolores Rodríguez, kept intact the work in his studio, a regionalist-style pavilion built in 1947. The museum opened on 8 May 1971 in this small two-storey building, which housed more than one hundred and fifty pieces from all stages of the artist's career, from academic studies to the unfinished painting Piedad.

The Cabildo de Gran Canaria acquired the studio, the garden and a group of works through a sale completed in January 1986, and the museum reopened on 24 July 1986 in collaboration with Gáldar town council. In 2003 the garden of the family home was added, and in 2014 an extension added the ground floor of the adjoining house, with a new museographic approach that turned it into the Centro de Arte y Estudios Indigenistas.

The family home, of functionalist character, was designed in the 1930s with the architect Miguel Martín-Fernández de la Torre and preserves two murals by the painter on the staircase: Niños haciendo cometas and Camellos. The collection brings together canvases, drawings, sketches, prints, sculptures, ceramics and illustrated books.
