About the museum
The Centro de Plantas Medicinales de Tejeda opened on 21 April 2007 and is a public facility run by the Tejeda town council. Its aim is to revive and share the relationship between people and nature through the medicinal use of plants, remedies and the beliefs associated with them. Botanists, shepherds, anthropologists, geographers, doctors, historians and chemists all took part in its design; the museum project was developed by the company Tibicena, Arqueología y Patrimonio.
The exhibition room presents natural remedies, with an explanation of each plant, its functions and recipes, the division of labour by gender and women's contribution to traditional medicine. Furniture from an old pharmacy from Arucas is on display, the figure of the yerbero (traditional herb seller) is highlighted, and visitors can learn about products typical of Tejeda, such as bitter almond oil or Cumbre honey.
The multipurpose room shows a wide variety of medicinal flora and how it is used, with an area where different plants can be seen drying, and at the entrance visitors can try infusions of plants from the municipality. Outside there is an interpretive garden. According to its listing, it is the only centre of its kind in the Canary Islands.
