About the museum
Christopher Columbus died in Valladolid in 1506. A study by the historian Matías Sangrador held that he had died in a house on the former calle Ancha de la Magdalena; for this reason the city council gave its name to the street and placed a plaque on the building. Later research showed that this was an error.
In the late 1950s, on the initiative of Jaime Alba and the newspaper El Norte de Castilla, it was proposed to build a museum dedicated to the Admiral on the site. The official opening took place on 22 May 1968. The building, in an Isabelline Gothic style, aims to give the typical look of the 16th century and reproduces a historic inn and the “Palacio del Almirante” in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, which was owned by Diego Columbus.
Five rooms hold documents and memorabilia from the Columbian era, a collection of objects from indigenous American cultures and paintings, including a fragment of the Lienzo de Tlaxcala and the painting by Rementería showing the death of Columbus. The museum also functions as a research centre on the history of America.
