About the museum

The Real Academia de Bellas Artes de la Purísima Concepción was founded in 1779 and received royal protection from Charles III in 1783. Over its history it has had several seats: from 1856 to 1935 it occupied the former Colegio de Santa Cruz, then moved to the Colegio de San Gregorio and the Colegio de San José, and in 1948 it was installed in the Casa de Cervantes, a state-owned building from 1601 next to the house where Miguel de Cervantes stayed during his time in Valladolid. Only since 1989 has it had proper museum facilities there.

The collection comes mostly from the competitions the Academy began organising in 1863 to build a gallery of contemporary artists. It has been enlarged through donations and through works that academicians handed over when they joined the institution. It also includes works on deposit from the Museo del Prado and the Museo Nacional de Escultura.

The most important pieces are displayed on the second floor of the building, grouped by technique. In painting, the bequest of the Valencian painter José Vergara (1726–1799), with ten canvases, stands out, alongside works by professors and students of the institution. The sculpture section brings together works by Aurelio Rodríguez Carretero, Dionisio Pastor Valsero, Darío Chicote and Mariano Benlliure, among others. The route thus sums up the history of the Academy itself through the work of its masters and pupils.
