About the museum
The Casa-Museo Emilia Pardo Bazán occupies an 18th-century building bearing a coat of arms on the Rúa Tabernas, in the old town of A Coruña, which the writer's parents bought after her birth in 1851. Emilia Pardo Bazán spent her childhood and youth there, kept living in the house after her marriage and wrote a large part of her novels there. She also held her literary gatherings and great parties there, such as the tribute to Miguel de Unamuno in 1903, and the editorial office of “La Revista de Galicia” and the Sociedad del Folk-lore Gallego were based there.
In 1956 her daughter and daughter-in-law, the author's heirs, signed the deed of donation of the building to the Real Academia Galega, which undertook to preserve and disseminate her legacy. After a thorough renovation begun in 1971, the building was inaugurated on 22 March 1979 as the new headquarters of the Academy and as a house museum. The museum space was reopened in 2003 with a new exhibition approach.
The museum holds some four hundred pieces, many from the writer's personal collection: paintings, furniture, sculptures, tapestries and porcelain. The route recreates the intimate atmosphere of the house and shows manuscripts, first editions of her works in different languages and volumes from her personal library, of which the Real Academia Galega holds about 8,000 books.
