About the museum

The house museum was the home of the family of Santiago Casares Quiroga, a lawyer and Republican politician who served as Minister of the Navy, of the Interior and of War, and as President of the Government of the Second Republic. In it, in 1922, his daughter María Casares was born, a leading stage and film actress who achieved success in exile in France, where she received the Molière Award.

The museum opened on 14 April 2007 and is run by A Coruña City Council. It recreates how the house was, with its dining room, kitchen, library and bathroom, and explains the history of the Casares family and of republicanism in A Coruña and Galicia through original objects and reproductions of photographs and documents.

It has three permanent exhibitions, devoted to María Casares and Casares Quiroga, to the Second Republic and to the Casares Quiroga family. The ground floor is used for temporary exhibitions.
