About the museum
The museum opened in 1990 in a building specially constructed beside the Santa María do Campo collegiate church, in the Old Town of A Coruña. It was designed by the architect Manuel Gallego Jorreto, who conceived the central staircase as a jewel box holding the pieces.
Its holdings are silverwork used in the liturgy of the collegiate church over the centuries: chalices, reliquaries, sacras, censers, croziers (báculos) and other pieces from different schools, periods and countries. Among the most notable are a Eucharistic casket and a monstrance of late 17th-century German Baroque, a gift from Queen Mariana of Neuburg, wife of Charles II, who spent a night in A Coruña in 1690 on her way to her wedding.
The exhibition is arranged chronologically and by school across four levels: pieces from the 16th and 17th centuries and some from the mid-18th century; silverwork from A Coruña and Córdoba from the late 18th and early 19th centuries; croziers and metalwork from the 19th century; and works from the schools of Salamanca and Santiago de Compostela, including pieces by Jacobo Pecul.
