About the museum
The Casa Museo de María Pita is a municipal museum space devoted to making known the figure of the heroine of A Coruña and the historical context in which she lived, between the 16th and 17th centuries. During this period A Coruña acquired the administrative and military functions that would shape its later development.
The site on which the museum stands was occupied in the 16th century by a house belonging to María Pita's family. The house originally belonged to her first husband, Juan Alonso de Rois, who had inherited it from his grandmother, and it later passed to the couple's daughter, while the mother acted as usufructuary and guardian. María Pita, of humble origin, married four times and stood out for her role during the English siege of 1589, for which she later claimed the rewards granted by the king.
The museum has a ground floor and three levels. It includes an introductory room on Galicia and the city in the 16th and 17th centuries, the recreation of the bedroom and kitchen of the family house, a room on A Coruña as a fortress of the Spanish Empire, and another on the siege of the city and María Pita's life. On the ground floor there is also a room for temporary exhibitions.
