About the museum
The Casa Museo Miguel Hernández is the house where the poet from Orihuela lived with his parents and siblings. It stands at number 73 on the street popularly known as calle de Arriba and was a farmhouse with livestock, similar to others on that street at the beginning of the 20th century.
The Orihuela town council started the procedures to buy the house in 1974 with the aim of turning it into a museum, and acquired it in 1981. In 1985 a detailed restoration was carried out, with financial support from the Fundación del Banco Exterior de España and the Banco de Alicante, and the house has been open to the public since then. Since 1994 it has been run jointly by the town council and the Fundación Cultural Miguel Hernández.
The complex follows the slope of the land in terraces: the house and the patio, with its well and stone basin, the goat shed and the garden, where the fig tree grows that the poet dedicated to some of his verses. The display keeps the furniture and household items typical of Orihuela homes at the beginning of the 20th century, together with photographs from different moments in the poet’s life. The route also includes a visitor reception centre and a room for temporary exhibitions.
