About the museum
The Museo de la Muralla is the result of excavations carried out between 1998 and 2000 on the site of the Casa del Paso, during the construction of the teaching block of the Salesas Campus of the Miguel Hernández University in Orihuela. The remains were preserved beneath the new building, and the museum opened in 2001.
A perimeter corridor and glass walkways allow visitors to tour the ruins, which are explained through a video, panels, models and materials displayed in cases. The wall, declared an Asset of Cultural Interest on 14 December 1998, dates from the Almohad period (second half of the 12th century and first half of the 13th century); four towers and about 80 metres of curtain wall survive.
Islamic and late-medieval houses with central courtyards can also be seen, along with Arab baths outside the walls, the remains of a Gothic palace linked to Infante Fernando de Aragón, lord of Orihuela in the second half of the 14th century, and the Casa del Paso, an 18th-century manor house built over part of the wall.
