About the museum
The MUDIC opened on 25 November 2008, when the Nobel Prize-winning physicist George F. Smoot inaugurated it on the Desamparados campus of the Miguel Hernández University. The museum grew out of decades of work by science teachers from the Vega Baja del Segura, who organised school science fairs and outreach activities.
It is run by the Fundación Museo Didáctico e Interactivo de Ciencias de la Vega Baja del Segura de la Comunitat Valenciana “Jesús Carnicer”. The Miguel Hernández University supports it and advises it through its scientific committee, and Orihuela town council is among the collaborating institutions.
More than 1,500 m² of interactive modules are spread over four areas: the Charles Darwin room (biology, evolution and anatomy), the Maria Sklodowska room (chemistry, the periodic table and plasma), the Isaac Newton room (light, optics and lasers) and the Albert Einstein workshop classroom. The offer is completed by the Henrietta Leavitt planetarium, a science garden with the Norman Borlaug orchard, and temporary exhibitions. The visits are led by science guides and include a practical workshop.
