About the museum

The Casa-Museo Unamuno opened in 1953 to mark the seventh centenary of the University of Salamanca. It is attached to the Plateresque façade of the Escuelas Mayores and was designed by the architect Andrés García de Quiñones in the 18th century as the university's meeting room and the rector's residence. Miguel de Unamuno and his family lived in the house from 1900, when he was appointed rector, until his dismissal in 1914. Four of his children were born there, and he wrote several of his best-known works there.

The visit covers three levels. On the ground floor is the Salón Rectoral (Rector's Hall), an institutional space and the writer's workplace, furnished with a 17th-century tapestry, a Baroque bargueño and a Renaissance chest with eight locks, and presided over by a portrait of Unamuno painted by José Aguiar in 1935. The first floor houses an exhibition on his life, his work as a professor and his political activity, with portraits, caricatures and landscapes by artists of his time, as well as early paintings and paper bow ties made by Unamuno himself, and it preserves the family home with its furniture and personal objects. On the second floor are his library, his personal archive and a documentation centre.

Unamuno's descendants ceded his archive to the State on the condition that the University of Salamanca should keep it, so the house is now a reference centre for research on the author. Since 1994 it has also handled the editorial secretariat of the “Cuadernos de la Cátedra Miguel de Unamuno”, a journal founded in 1948. The museum is a founding member of ACAMFE and belongs to ICOM.
