About the museum
The Federación de Peñas Taurinas de Salamanca “Helmántica”, founded in 1989, proposed around 1993 setting up a museum, and formed a committee that gathered objects of artistic or historical value donated or loaned by bullfighters, cattle breeders and fans. The museum opened on 29 December 1993 in premises provided by the town council on calle del Doctor Piñuela.
In 1995 it was named after Primitivo Sánchez Laso, in tribute to a fan who presided over the Peña Taurina Salmantina. In November 2017 a new museum display was presented. Today it is run by Salamanca City Council through the municipal tourism company.
The exhibition is divided into three sections: the world of the bull, bullfighting, and the depiction of the bull in art. Its collection consists of donated or loaned objects and recalls the bullfighters of Salamanca, born in the city or adopted by it, as well as the landscape of the dehesas (wooded pasturelands). With the “Museo Itinerante” the museum takes exhibitions of bullfighting art to other places in the province.
