About the museum
The Casa Museo Guayasamín opened on 12 May 1995 as the result of an agreement signed in 1994 between the Diputación Provincial de Cáceres and the Ecuadorian painter Oswaldo Guayasamín. It was conceived as a cultural bridge between Spain and Latin America.
The building is a former olive mill which the Pedrilla family acquired in the mid-19th century. It was converted for museum use while keeping elements of its industrial past, such as the old mill, and it forms part of the cultural complex on the former Pedrilla estate, alongside the Museo Casa Pedrilla.
Originally it brought together a broad selection of archaeological pieces of pre-Columbian and colonial art from Guayasamín's personal collection, works by the artist himself as painter and sculptor, and pieces of craftwork and goldsmith work from the workshop of the Quito Foundation. Today it holds works linked to the artist and also hosts temporary exhibitions and cultural activities. Next to the building stands a repoussé bronze replica, about three metres high, of the monument to the Inca leader Rumiñahui.
