About the museum
The Museo de Escultura al Aire Libre (open-air sculpture museum) of the Parque del Príncipe opened in 1997 on the initiative of the sculptor Pepe Noja, who had promoted similar projects in Aracena (Huelva) and Alcalá de Henares. It offers an alternative to the traditional museum: instead of rooms, the works are displayed in a large urban park near the historic centre and the Plaza Mayor.
The sculptures are spread around the park's large circular pond, between the Avenida de Hernán Cortés and the Avenida de Rodríguez de Ledesma. According to the town council there are 27 pieces by artists from two generations of the late 20th century, among them Luis Caruncho, Teresa Eguíbar, Lorenzo Frechilla, Amadeo Gabino, Feliciano Hernández, José Luis Sánchez and Aurelio Teno, with styles ranging from figurative to abstract.
The park also includes a botanical garden next to the main entrance and, at the end of the route, the fountain of La Madrila, restored by the Escuela Taller (training workshop).
