About the museum

The Museo de Cáceres is the only museum in Extremadura that brings together, in a single institution, evidence of the history of the province from the first human presence in the Palaeolithic to contemporary art. It is a museum with provincial scope and state ownership, run by the Regional Government of Extremadura (Junta de Extremadura). Its origins go back to the Museo Arqueológico Escolar, created at the end of 1898 on the initiative of Gabriel Llabrés at the Instituto de Segunda Enseñanza (secondary school), and its official establishment came in 1917.

In 1933 the museum moved to the Casa de las Veletas, rented from the Dukes of Fernán Núñez. The present palace dates from works of 1600 and has a square courtyard with eight Tuscan columns; it stands on the site that must have been occupied by the Muslim alcazar. The collection grew through bequests such as that of Vicente Paredes Guillén, with his coin collection, and through acquisitions such as the Serradilla treasure, which came to light in 1965.

In May 2023 a comprehensive renovation of the museum began. The first phase ended with the reopening of the Casa de los Caballos on 16 July 2025, a 16th-century building behind the palace. The second phase, in the Palacio de las Veletas and the historic garden, will run until December 2026. In the meantime, the permanent exhibition is displayed in the Casa de los Caballos.
