About the museum
The Museo de Historia y Cultura Casa Pedrilla opened in 1995 in the so-called Casa Pedrilla, a manor house from the 1940s designed by the Cáceres architect José María López Montenegro for the full professor Francisco Martín Fernández-Pedrilla and his wife, Ana de Lancastre Laboreiro e Sousa. Her Portuguese ancestry is reflected in the construction and decorative details of the building, which is surrounded by a garden in the centre of Cáceres. The Provincial Council acquired it in the early 1990s and restored it between 1994 and 1995.
The museum focuses on the recent history of the province of Cáceres, especially the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, and presents the great personalities of culture, art and politics of that period. Its collection is based on the holdings of the Provincial Council itself and has been expanded with donations from private individuals. A technical commission of historians, humanists, writers and anthropologists helped choose the content, with broad participation from the University of Extremadura.
The route is spread over three floors. The ground floor shows how the province began to think of itself through folklorists, researchers, cultural magazines, photography and film. The first floor is devoted to Extremaduran painting of the 19th and 20th centuries, from academicism to regionalism. The second floor offers, through panels, an educational view of the history of Extremadura from Prehistory to the present day, with a summary of its relationship with America.
