About the museum
The museum occupies a former ceramics factory that Severino Torregrosa opened in 1902 and that closed in 1975. Ilse Schütz founded the museum in 1981, and her collection of almost 2,000 ceramic pieces, donated in 2016, forms the basis of the current holdings.
The building was refurbished between 2007 and 2014, and the museum reopened in 2016, adapted to the needs of a modern museum. Today it holds more than 4,500 objects, mainly pottery, though it also includes ethnological pieces from Agost and other regions of Spain.
The rooms present the wide collection of everyday objects made in Agost over the last two centuries and the process of making ceramics. The route includes the entrance to a “horno árabe” (Arab kiln), the area of potters’ wheels and the clay settling pools. The museum also has a temporary exhibition room, a specialised library of more than 4,000 volumes, which is still being catalogued and is not freely accessible, and a multi-purpose room.
