About the museum
The Fundación Pedro Muñoz Seca was founded on 11 March 1995. Its trustees include direct descendants of the author and the El Puerto de Santa María town council. Its aims are to preserve, study and disseminate the documentary, bibliographic, artistic and furniture holdings related to Muñoz Seca, and to promote comedy and theatre, especially in his home town. Most of the museum’s collection comes from the family’s donation and has been supplemented with pieces acquired or given.
The seat of the museum is the Edificio San Luis Gonzaga, on the main floor of the former Jesuit college. The college was founded in 1864 on the site of the Convento de San Francisco and was one of the most important schools in Lower Andalusia; among its pupils were Pedro Muñoz Seca, Juan Ramón Jiménez and Rafael Alberti. The neoclassical main façade was completed in 1895. Inside, the marble staircase and the colonnaded patio, which works like a cloister, stand out.
The permanent exhibition, titled “Pedro Muñoz Seca: el humor dentro y fuera del teatro”, traces his life and work in a light-hearted tone full of anecdotes. It combines photographs, posters and caricatures with original pieces such as manuscripts, first editions, personal belongings, letters and the author’s desk, as well as film stills and testimonies about him.
