About the museum
The ECCO occupies the former Acuartelamiento de Carlos III, a barracks whose construction began in 1733 to a design by the military engineer Ignacio Sala. The central building housed the troops and the side pavilions the officers. After a long period of rehabilitation, the Ayuntamiento de Cádiz (city council) converted it into a public cultural facility.
The centre opened in 2012 with the aim of bringing contemporary art closer to the public. It has around 3,600 m², of which 2,100 m² is exhibition space, distributed across interconnected rooms that form circulation loops, and outdoor areas. It also has a foyer and a landscaped courtyard of about 300 m².
Contemporary art exhibitions are presented throughout the year in the various rooms. As a permanent display, it houses the series “El Valle de los Caídos (1980-1987)” by Enrique Naya and Juan José Carrero, known as Costus, figures of the Madrid movida. Their works reinterpret the sculptures of the basilica of the Valle de los Caídos and use well-known figures of that cultural scene as models.
