About the museum
The Fundación Rafael Alberti was established in 1993 to look after the work of the poet and painter, to promote its study and dissemination, and to highlight the importance of the Generation of '27 and the friendship that united its members. Its seat is a white three-storey house of simple Andalusian construction, bright and full of light, where Alberti lived as a child. It is very close to Calle Palacios, where the poet was born.
The house preserves mementos of his childhood, the donation that Alberti made in 1978, together with his first wife, María Teresa León, to his native town, and later additions. To extend the exhibition, El Puerto de Santa María Town Council, the Ministry of Culture, the Junta de Andalucía and the Cádiz Provincial Council bought the neighbouring building.
The permanent exhibition follows the author's life in stages: his childhood in El Puerto, the years in Madrid, the Republic and the Civil War, exile and the return to Spain. Manuscripts, graphic works and personal objects are displayed. The first floor includes a room dedicated to María Teresa León, an audiovisual room and the library.
