About the museum

The Casa Museu occupies two buildings of heritage interest: Can Rocosa, a 17th-century farmhouse (masía), and the Casa Domènech, a Modernist house from 1919. It presents the career of the architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner (1849–1923), a key figure of Catalan Modernisme.

The Domènech Roura family spent their summers in Canet de Mar, at first renting houses in the town, until in 1885 they bought one on the riera Buscarons and, about ten years later, the neighbouring house. In 1900 Maria Roura acquired Can Rocosa, which the architect used as a workplace; there he designed major works, including the Hospital de Sant Pau.

The Casa Domènech, built between 1918 and 1919, was his last work: it remodelled two fishermen's houses he had bought at the end of the 19th century. On the ground floor are the day rooms (dining room, lounge, kitchen, bathroom and Maria Roura's bedroom), and on the upper floors the bedrooms, arranged around a double-height inner courtyard staircase. The town council bought Can Rocosa in 1991 to dedicate it to spreading knowledge of the architect's work and life.

The permanent collection brings together ceramics that Domènech used in his buildings, wrought-iron designs made with various blacksmiths, often with zoomorphic motifs such as dragons and griffins, and trial plasters from his collaborators. The museum holds no original stained glass, but it does have later works and replicas of those in other buildings by the architect.
