About the museum
José Monge Cruz, Camarón de la Isla, was born on 5 December 1950 at number 29 of Calle del Carmen, in the Las Callejuelas district of San Fernando, and lived there for his first sixteen years. He was the son of a Romani blacksmith who loved cante jondo, and in this modest house he heard his first fandangos and saetas.
San Fernando town council bought the property in 2012 and opened it as an interpretation centre in 2016. It is now presented under the name “Las Claves de Camarón” and recreates a little-known stage of his life, his childhood and youth, which shaped him before he became a flamenco legend.
The route shows San Fernando in the fifties and sixties and the atmosphere of the neighbourhood, with a shared courtyard, an introduction to the flamenco palos and a reconstruction of the two small rooms where the family lived. The house is part of the Ruta de Camarón de la Isla, together with the interpretation centre, the forge, the monument and the mausoleum.
