About the museum
The Museo Municipal Francisco Montes Paquiro opened on 13 March 2003 on Calle San Agustín in Chiclana de la Frontera. It was founded by Pedro Leal Aragón, in agreement with the town council, and is dedicated to Francisco de Paula Montes Reina, “Paquiro”, a bullfighter born in Chiclana in 1805 who died in 1851.
In 2005 the museum was expanded following the acquisition of the Colección Sagnier, a set of more than 1,000 pieces that raised its historical and artistic value. This expansion included, among other works, the portrait of Paquiro by Antonio Cavanna, painted around 1835.
The visit covers four rooms: one devoted to Paquiro and his time, with panels on the social and cultural context of his era; another for temporary exhibitions and cultural events; the room “El Toreo y las Artes” (Bullfighting and the Arts), which relates bullfighting to painting, drawing, sculpture, music and poster art; and “El Toreo Contemporáneo” (Contemporary Bullfighting), with suits of lights, capes, bullfighting equipment and a chapel. The museum also has an open-air garden, used for events, and a shop selling bullfighting culture items.
