About the museum
The Museo de Chiclana first opened its doors on 28 July 2010 in the heart of the historic centre, on the Plaza Mayor, next to the church of San Juan Bautista and opposite the Arquillo del Reloj. It occupies the Casa Briones, a name that refers to the family who lived there for a long time. It is an 18th-century building with one of the most beautiful façades of civil neoclassicism, attributed to the architect Torcuato Cayón.
The interior, newly built, follows a modern museographic concept and offers a route arranged by successive contents. Since 19 February 2013 the museum has been run exclusively by the municipality, through the public company EMSISA.
The permanent exhibition is a journey through time through the history of the city, from the first prehistoric settlements to the present day. It covers both facts of historical relevance and objects from the everyday life of those who lived in Chiclana before.
